Compatibility with antivirus software

(Updated: )

When CleanMyMac scans your Mac for threats and vulnerabilities—whether in the background, in real time, or on demand—it performs certain file operations, specifically:

  • In Mail, if CleanMyMac detects malware in an email attachment, it removes the infected file and replaces it with a zero-byte file of the same name.

  • When handling DMG files, CleanMyMac creates a temporary directory—an isolated, safe environment—unpacks the contents there, and analyzes them for threats.

If you have third-party antivirus software installed, these actions may trigger alerts, cause your antivirus to treat CleanMyMac as suspicious, or even block its operations and quarantine it.

To prevent conflicts, you can either:

  • Deselect options to scan DMG disk images and email attachments in CleanMyMac settings.

  • Add CleanMyMac to the ignore list of your antivirus software.
